Oleksiy Arestovych, a veteran of the Ukrainian military intelligence service, narrated time that when the President’s headquarters was attacked early in the invasion, those inside defended themselves with automatic weapons and erected rudimentary defenses.
Arestovych described the scene as follows: “It was an absolute madhouse. Automatic for everyone. The place was wide open. We didn’t even have concrete blocks to close the road.”
The military then “informed Zelenskyy that Russian strike teams were in place parachuted to Kyiv to kill or capture him and his family,” according to the magazine. Both British and US forces then “offered to evacuate Zelenskyy and allow him to set up a government-in-exile”. The Telegraph reported. “But he never really thought about it.”
Zelenskyy explained his decision not to flee and told Time he was sending a message to the people of Ukraine. “You understand they’re watching,” he said. “You are an icon. They must act as the head of state must act.”
In the early days of the invasion, the president woke before dawn and had his first meeting with his top general at 5 a.m., “before the light began to peek through the sandbags in the compound’s windows,” Time reported.
As the war progressed, it was “typical for the president and his staff to gather around a phone or laptop in the bunker,” the magazine added, “to curse images of devastation or a drone strike on a Russian tank.” cheer”.
