Wales Rugby Union becomes first women’s sports team sponsored by period lingerie brand

The rugby team teamed up with trousers company WUKA to highlight the benefits of women exercising while on their period.

Wales Rugby Union has teamed up with a period underwear brand to become the first women’s sports team to be sponsored by a menstrual underwear company.

New research has revealed that periods affect 80% of women’s exercise schedules because they worry about leaks, cramps, and general health.

And one in six women admit that they worry that exercising while menstruating is harmful.

Menstrual underwear brand WUKA (WAKE UP AND KICK ASS) will offer the Wales national senior women’s team a range of sustainable period lingerie.

This will be the first pants brand to sponsor a sports team.

Jo Perkins, Head of Fitness for Women’s Wales, said: “This partnership is great news for us as a program and for women’s sport in general.

“As part of our show, we are looking at the many ways we can support our players so they can reach their full potential on the pitch – and that includes including addressing aspects of women’s health.

“Recognizing the importance of stages is an important first step. The menstrual cycle should be seen as a real advantage for women, not just as a sign of good health – but by adjusting diet and exercise at key times in the cycle, Women can increase performance.

“WUKA is the perfect partner. With this practical support, players will be able to feel strong, confident and supported to help them focus on playing rather than worrying about other factors.”

Ruby Raut, founder of WUKA, said: “From our research, we know that some women still feel they encounter barriers in certain sports while menstruating.

“We feel it is important to educate women about the benefits of exercise and sports during menstruation.

“We also wanted to highlight the variety of hygiene products available today that can cater to women of all shapes and sizes for a variety of sports.”
