Wallace Shawn Feels As If He Was Living In Danny DeVito’s Shadow During Filming The Princess Bride

Wallace Shawn explained to Weekly entertainment that he felt his performance was influenced by the overly long shadow of the first actor considered for the role: Danny DeVito. Shawn explains:

“I’m not the first one they want [for the part]. Unfortunately, my agent at the time believed it would be helpful for me to know who they really wanted, so he told me – it was Danny DeVito. Looking back at it, it didn’t help. Danny is inimitable. Every scene we did, I envisioned how he would do it and I knew I could never do it the way he could. It makes it challenging. I’ve mentioned it to Danny ever since. I said, ‘You know, of all the things that I’ve done since birth, the best known is the part I had because you weren’t there.’ He might have laughed nervously when I said that. “

It’s really scary to know that not only are you not the first choice for the role, but the first choice indicates that it’s a really bigger actor than in real life. Of course, it works best because imagining anyone other than Shawn in the role, even someone as formidable as DeVito, is truly unthinkable. Shawn made his own Vizzini and didn’t have any of the anxiety he might have felt at the time.

“Never confront the Sicilian when death is near!”
