War veterans of Ukraine take part in warrior games in Brighton

A team of disabled Ukrainian military veterans based in Brighton is scheduled to compete in America’s Warrior Games.

The team, which consists of more than 30 disabled athletes, will fly to Orlando after training in Brighton for the final five weeks.

Blind Veterans UK helped host the team as they were unable to train at home in Ukrine due to the war.

Ukraine team manager Pavlo Kononenko said: “Our team will compete at the Warrior Games not only to win medals, but also to draw the world’s attention to everything that is happening in Ukraine and to show everyone that our will to win never subsides.

“There is no way we could have trained in such good and peaceful conditions in Ukraine and we all agree that the level of support we have experienced here has been of the highest standard.”

The team will compete in sports like sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball throughout the tournament before flying back to Poland after the games.

Lesley Garven, Blind Veterans Brighton Center Manager, said: “All of us at Blind Veterans UK wanted to help in any way we could when we heard about the opportunity to host the team.

“The amount of work done by all the staff at our Brighton center has been immense and everyone has improved, they have all been fantastic.”
