WHATSAPP users are still falling victim to a usual “Hello Mother” scam that has already cost Brits £1.5million this year.

The so-called Friend in Need scam is when a scammer pretends to be a loved one who needs your help.

They usually text from an entirely new number pretending to be a friend or family member who lost or damaged their primary phone.

Because of this, you urgently need to send them some money so they can either buy a new phone or do something urgent like pay a bill.

Cheating was a particular problem for parents as scammers exploited emotions.

According to Action Fraud, the tactic was reported 1,235 times between February 3 and June 21 of this year.

Concerned WhatsApp users have been urged to stop. Think. Call if you get an unusual request.

Police say you should call the person on their usual phone number to verify that the message is really from them.

They also warn people not to rush into making a hasty decision, as this is also a common trick used by thieves.

“If you receive a message like this from a friend or family member, do not send any money until you have had an opportunity to call them and verify their identity,” he said Detective Chief Inspector Craig Mullish of the City of London Police.
