WHATSAPP is testing some big changes to the app – including massive tweaks to how group chats work.
The hugely popular chat app is constantly adding new features, and one of them is called Communities.
Communities are basically large groups that contain WhatsApp group chats.
The brand new feature called Communities has been in development for months.
But the feature was recently spotted by sleuths when testing it on the iPhone WABetaInfo who are mining the beta version of WhatsApp for exciting changes.
Each community is like a giant “group” for your existing WhatsApp groups.
But having multiple groups can be chaotic at times — and hard to keep track of.
When it’s in place, you’ll be able to notify multiple groups at once.
For example, you might have a study group that contains many smaller groups.
Or maybe your neighborhood would have a community that splits into separate groups to educate and complain about neighborhood issues.
“It’s a private place where group admins have more control over some groups on WhatsApp, available in a future update of the app,” WABetaInfo said.
“It’s like a group chat, and group admins can link other groups in the community.”
WABetaInfo added: “It will be possible to reach everyone at once by sending messages to all participants of these groups connected to the community.”
Unfortunately, Meta-owned WhatsApp has not confirmed when this feature will be rolling out to the general public.
That’s not all!
WABetaInfo technical investigators also revealed a number of other features currently in development or testing…
- Users can contact companies without sharing their phone number
- The ability to save disappearing messages
- Search messages by date
- More noticeable privacy settings
- A new camera shortcut
- Big animated orange heart emoji
