IF you’re a proud Pixel smartphone owner, you might want to stop and think before upgrading to the latest version of Android.
Android 13 was officially launched on Tuesday, and while the newly released software improves customization and multitasking, it’s also said to wipe out a new feature from Pixel phones.
Introduced in an Android 13 beta update earlier this year, the feature improved on-device search by unifying it.
For example, the search bar at the bottom of the Pixel home screen has been aligned with the search bar at the top of the app drawer.
The feature worked by generating results from both the web and the Pixel phone when switched on, making for a much more intuitive experience.
However, Android users who have installed the latest version of Android 13 have found that the feature has disappeared completely.
Before, when the two search bars were unified, they both looked identical – with the Google “G” logo.
Now only the home screen search bar has this theme and the other one which is at the top of the app drawer now just says “Find your phone and more”.
According to a message to 9to5GoogleGoogle is aware of the issue and intends to add the feature back in an “upcoming release”.
Luckily, the novel search tool is only missed by those who have the Android 13 beta installed.
If you’re upgrading from Android 12, you shouldn’t notice anything missing.
Though it’s worth noting that Android 13 is only accessible to users with select Google Pixel phones so far – the oldest eligible model is the Pixel 4, released in 2019.
If you’re a Pixel user who has yet to update to the latest version of the operating system, you can do so by going to your device’s Settings menu, tapping on System and selecting System Update.
The new software will be extended to non-Google Android-friendly devices later this year, like the Samsung Galaxy.
Among the features you can expect from Android 13 are updates to Material You, Android’s customization tool, as well as better security procedures running in the background.
Some of the new additions are comparable to existing features on iPhone, while others are novel concepts that will make Android more unique than ever.
