EVERYONE who owns a Google Nest doorbell has been warned that recordings could be shared with authorities in emergency situations.
And even without an arrest warrant.
The property of the tech giant guidelines reveal that in extreme situations it “may leak information to a government agency”.
Such a measure would be used when they “reasonably believe” it could save someone from death or serious bodily harm.
This can happen in serious situations such as bomb threats, school shootings, kidnapping, suicide prevention and missing person cases.
Amazon has a similar policy for Ring, which has resulted in 11 requests being fulfilled so far this year.
But Google said so 9to5Mac That’s it, to date, not sharing any footage in this way.
Still, the company thinks it’s “important” to reserve the right to do so.
A spokesman said CNET that Google “may release information to law enforcement without a subpoena or warrant” – at least in the US under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
The law in question states that content may be provided “if the provider has a good faith belief that an emergency involving a risk of death or serious physical injury to any person warrants the prompt disclosure of communications related to required in an emergency”.
But the spokesman said Google is trying to notify users when something like this happens.
Other video doorbell makers like Arlo, Eufy, and Wyze have said they would never release video without a search warrant.
Some devices, including Nest, offer end-to-end encryption.
