Warning to millions of WhatsApp users – deleting texts will change forever

WHATSAPP is making a big change to its disappearing messages feature.

Meta (which owns WhatsApp) is revamping the feature to make it much easier to use.

With Disappearing Messages, you can set texts to automatically disappear after a certain amount of time.

This is a great way to increase your privacy on WhatsApp and delete records of your conversations over the years.

WhatsApp is currently testing a brand new interface for the feature in the app’s beta trial, as spied WABetaInfo.

The new settings page states: “For greater privacy, new messages will disappear from chat for everyone after the duration you select.

“Chat participants will see that you have enabled this.

Then there’s a section called Set for your account where you can choose a default message time for all new chats you create.

After that there is a section called Set For Your Current Chats.

This allows you to select specific chats in which you want new messages to disappear. This applies to already existing conversations.

It’s now much easier to set timers on existing conversations and apply message timers to new chats.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to go back and bulk-send every text you’ve ever seen.

But it’s a good feature to have it enabled for the future.

The new UI isn’t available for general users yet, but it’s being tested in beta – so it might not be far off.

If you want to try new WhatsApp features first, you should join the beta.

Follow our guide below to find out how.

How to send WhatsApp disappearance messages

So how can you enable WhatsApp disappearance messages today?

Open your app on mobile, then go to Settings > Account > Privacy.

Check for missing messages, and then slide the switch to the on position.

Then select a time period for messages to disappear – 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.

A message will appear in chat confirming that message disappearance has been enabled.

To enable it for an existing chat, you must first archive and then unarchive it.

You can also enable message disappearance for specific chats by tapping on a WhatsApp contact’s individual settings.

The system is of course not foolproof.

If someone takes screenshots or records your chat, there is no way to remove that content from their phone using an official WhatsApp feature.

As always, the best way to keep embarrassing or regrettable content off the internet is to not post it in the first place.

But if you’re particularly concerned, using Disappearing Messages is a great system.

Remember: only SMS sent after you enable Disappearing Messages will be deleted. It will not go back in time and erase old letters for you.

Texts are also not deleted in other chats to which they were forwarded.

And disappearing messages are still stored in a recipient’s backup – but deleted when that user restores from the backup.

Quoting messages can also cause text to remain in a chat even though the original message has been deleted.
