Wastewater pipes in the West Way Lancing area are being relined

A WATER COMPANY repaired sewer pipes in an area that was flooded with sewage.

West Way in Lancing has suffered six separate outbreaks along just over a mile of pipelines since October last year.

Each time it has resulted in “disgusting” runoff all over the street.

The pipe broke again during work today, which Southern Water says is “not unusual”.

The company was “just days” away from repairing the old pipes in the area last month when there was another outbreak.

In the last two weeks itand has started relining pipes to prevent future problems.

A spokeswoman said: “Since July 18 we have been working to re-line the interior of our sewer line in West Way, Lancing. This work follows a series of ruptures on the aging pipeline damaged by exposure to salt water.

“It’s not uncommon for eruptions to occur during work and we were prepared for that. Tanker trucks and sandbags were on site, allowing us to quickly control the blast and reduce the impact on nearby residents.

“We have communicated with customers prior to and during the work and would like to thank them for their continued patience and understanding.

“We apologize for the disruption to road users in the area.”

There were major delays this morning on the A259 as temporary traffic lights were in place to allow work to take place in and around the West Way area.

The pipe broke late last year and again multiple times in the last month, causing sewage to flood the street from curb to curb.

Local residents had previously criticized the water utility for not fixing the problem sooner.

Nigel Sweet, who lives in The Broadway, said last month: “Southern Water must have spent incredible amounts of money on this, but for some reason they haven’t done the obvious and replaced the main line, which they admit they have to do.

“Why would you tinker around and spend big bucks on repairs instead of fixing the root cause of the problem? That’s what frustrates us.”

A Southern Water spokeswoman issued an apology last month and said the leak was “frustrating as we were just days away from undertaking a relining program to future-proof the pipe”. Wastewater pipes in the West Way Lancing area are being relined
