World Champion Julian Alaphilippe is in stable condition after a serious crash at the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Monument classic but needs to remain in hospital for observation, his team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl said on Sunday.

The team said he suffered two broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade and a collapsed lung.

The Frenchman was conscious when he was treated in an ambulance, TV channel France 3 reported, after the 29-year-old was involved in a huge pile-up near the head of the peloton and crashed into a ditch around 62 kilometers from the finish.

Teammate Ilan Van Wilder, 21, suffered a fractured jaw in the same accident.

“Both will travel by ambulance to (the town of) Herentals for further evaluation and treatment,” the team said.
