Wayne Rooney explains why Man Utd’s decision to buy Cristiano Ronaldo was a mistake

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United last summer was divisive – and still is – despite the 37-year-old scoring 18 goals in 32 games this season

Wayne Rooney has claimed Cristiano Ronaldo’s return Manchester United did not work.

United’s No.7 celebrated a sensational comeback Last summer, when the leaders of the Reds desperately suppressed any possible move to neighbors Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side looked set to snag the five-time Ballon d’Or winner before a last-ditch call from Sir Alex Ferguson turned the entire move upside down.

Ronaldo got off to a flying start but questions arose as to whether he suited United’s style as the club’s form faltered. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked after a string of poor results – including a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool – and Ralf Rangnick was employed on an interim basis until the end of the season.

The questions only came thicker and faster when Ronaldo, 37, didn’t fit Rangnick’s pressing style of play. Despite the negative results, the United forward has still scored 18 goals in 32 games this season. Impressive Champions League goals ensured United reached the knockout rounds, while a stunning hat-trick against Tottenham silenced some critics.

However, Rooney remains unconvinced. England’s all-time top scorer believes United’s return of his former team-mate won’t bode well for the club’s future. When asked if the transfer worked on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Rooney replied: “You would have to say no at the moment.

“I think he scored goals, he scored important goals Champions League Early in the season he scored the hat trick against Tottenham, but I think when you look to the future of the club you need to go with younger, hungry players to do their best and lift Manchester United over the next two or three years. Obviously Cristiano is progressing a bit, he’s certainly not the player he was when he was in his 20s and that happens, that’s football. He’s dangerous in goal but they need more for the rest of the game, they need young, hungry players.”

Rooney also voiced his support for Mauricio Pochettino. The Paris Saint-Germain manager is in the running for the United job alongside Ajax’s Erik ten Hag. PSG’s Champions League exit and Lionel Messi’s poor form this season have raised question marks over his ability to handle world-class personalities, but Rooney is backing the Argentine to succeed at Old Trafford.

Pochettino is a top manager in my opinion,” he said. “He knows how to work with top quality players but also with young players. They have to get that mix right because they can’t afford to fail again.”

He added: “Pochettino did it in the First League, he knows the Premier League. At Tottenham he taught many young players southampton He also brought many young players through. So if I choose one of the two, I would choose Pochettino and give him time. For managers now they need time to come in and create their blueprint for a team, a club. If you give him time, I think he’ll do well.”
