Wayne Rooney resigned as Derby manager to devote himself full time to Coleen and his sons

Exclusive:

The real reason football hero Wayne Rooney quit his job as manager at Derby County Football Club for £90,000 a week is to spend the summer with his wife Coleen and their children, the source says

Wayne Rooney’s shock strike came so he could spend more time with wife Coleen and their kids, we can reveal.

Sources close to the football legend say he quit his £90,000 job as Derby County manager on Friday to support his family.

The dramatic move came after the couple faced intense scrutiny over Coleen’s “Wagatha Christie” legal battle with Rebekah Vardy, the rival footballer’s wife.

Now Wayne, 36, is taking his first full summer break in 20 years – dating back to when he and school sweetheart Coleen first started dating.

Coleen, 36, and her husband are enjoying a holiday in Ibiza with friends including former Manchester United captain Michael Carrick, 40, and West Brom boss Steve Bruce’s son Alex.

What follows is an uncompromising family trip to Dubai with sons Kai (12), Klay (9), Kit (6) and Cass (4).

Our source said, “Wayne’s always had pre-season tours, World Cups, Euros. He hasn’t had a summer off since he was a kid himself.

“He wants to spend the summer holidays with his boys. They soon split up from school and he just wants to spend a lot more time with them and Coleen.

“If he had stayed at Derby he would have to be back to work in about a week and preparing for the new season.

“That would hardly have given him any time to spend with the children. He just wants to enjoy a full summer with his kids – that’s going to be the boss.”

The former Everton, Manchester United and England star stunned fans of relegated league team Derby by giving up another year on his current contract. He has been widely praised for his efforts at the club, which is struggling to survive amid severe money problems and a search for new owners.

But our insider insisted Wayne hasn’t turned his back on his beloved sport for good. The source said: “He will be back, he loves football. Maybe after the summer if the right opportunity arises. But you have to find the balance between work and family.”

The pair are awaiting a verdict in the Wagatha case next week.

Coleen claimed Rebekah Vardy, the wife of Leicester City player Jamie, 35, divulged information from Coleen’s private Instagram social media account.

Rebekah, 40, denied the allegation and sued Coleen for defamation, leading to a £3million lawsuit in the High Court last month. Coleen, who posted pictures from her Ibiza holiday this week, wrote: “Magical memories, great friends, lots of belly laughs!! Very badly needed.”

Despite a string of past sex scandals involving Wayne, their marriage seems stronger than ever.
