The couple only realized they were on the wrong plane when another passenger told them they were in their seats.

The confusion stemmed from two flights departing from Manchester Airport for the same region at similar times.

Simon explained that due to the busy airport, they probably got on the wrong plane, which was seen Passengers wait for hours at the security checkpoint and even miss their flights.

He said: “When we got to the airport it was very crowded.

“We went through security and it was absolutely insane. We got through to departure knowing exactly what time our flight was.”

He added: “The gate went up and we got to Gate 48. They called the number on our boarding pass and my wife and I went upstairs. We walked through and straight to the plane.

“Someone came over and said we were in their seat, but we knew we were in the right place.

“Luckily we went to the front of the plane and they told us we were on the wrong plane.”

Luckily for the couple, their real flight was held and they were able to board, but Simon said they were then unable to sit in their seats they had selected because the couple were late arriving on the correct plane.

Blaming Ryanair, he said: “Ryanair’s lack of organization was abysmal. For some reason, two Ryanair flights to Alicante flew at pretty much the same time.”

However, Ryanair has stated that they are not at fault as it is the passenger’s responsibility to board the correct aircraft.

An airline spokesman told Sun Online Travel: “It is the responsibility of each passenger to ensure they board the correct aircraft.

“There are multiple touch points throughout the passenger journey that inform passengers of the aircraft’s destination, including:

  • Flight number and destination clearly printed on the passenger’s boarding pass
  • Flight number and destination are displayed at the gate
  • Flight number and destination are announced in the standard boarding PA
  • Flight number and destination will be mentioned in the welcome PA on board

“When these passengers went through security before boarding, there was no security risk.

“We are working with our handling agents at Manchester Airport to ensure this error does not occur again.”

Another pair boarded the wrong Ryanair plane and landed 800 miles away – and had no idea.

The stunned travelers were supposed to return to London after a short detour to France – but somehow they ended up in Spain.
