Although he labeled Ireland’s favorite contenders and called them “the most cohesive team in the world” ahead of Saturday’s Six Nations clash, England manager Eddie Jones remains convinced His team could deal a big blow to Andy Farrell’s psyche.
In the opening match of the 2019 Championship, the Australian side put on a stunning display in Dublin, sending Ireland off course after its Grand Slam success the previous year. Later, coach Joe Schmidt said that Ireland was “down a bit” from the loss.
Jones’ men then kept Ireland at bay with massive, psychologically damaging setbacks at Twickenham in 2019 and twice in 2020 before the game changed in Dublin last year.
And the coach believes his side can re-establish their dominance against Farrell’s side this weekend with both sides keen to continue the title hunt.
“There’s no reason we can’t,” he said. “We’re in the perfect spot, aren’t we? According to most journalists, they are flying high, we cannot go our own way or overcome the barrier. They were flying right down to the house and we had to catch them, so it was a great opportunity.
“We go into the game knowing they are a good team – we are a young team but very, very good and our best is yet to come. We are building and building in the right direction. ”
Jones believes Ireland’s system and Farrell’s decision to pick Leinster a lot mean they are in a strong position at this point in a World Cup cycle.
“All I can say is that once you get three months out of the World Cup, everyone is equal because everyone has the same amount of time,” he said.
“That’s where things get different for teams that could have been more efficient at other times, to their advantages. That’s all part of it.
“Ireland is literally, and I say it without hesitation, the most cohesive team in the world.
“The majority of their team trains together for most of the year, they are very coordinated in attack, they are very structured, they have sequenced matches and they are very difficult to break. We are looking forward to the challenge, we are not intimidated by any team. ”
