“We failed,” says the DayZ creator of regrets over his latest game

DAYZ creator Dean Hall has spoken candidly about struggling with his latest game Icarus and the shock of going from army recruit to millionaire overnight.

In an interview with GLHF at Gamescom 2022, one of the biggest gaming shows in the world, Hall spoke about how he’s let down the community and trying to make things right.

RocketWerkz’s latest survival game, Icarus, was released in 2021 and received mixed reviews. Hall owns his mistakes and talks about future changes.

Hall says, “We tried Icarus. So it’s a session-based survival game, and we had really mixed reactions – some people loved it, some people didn’t.

“So we’re kind of flipping the game now to have new, more traditional, what we call ‘Outposts’, or a more traditional Ark style.

“When it comes to questions of taste, the customer is always right. People want that experience, you give them that experience.

“I’m proud that we tried something. And that’s how you get experiences like DayZ for me – you have to try things.

“But trying things means you have to be willing to fail. And I think we failed a bit at that.

“And that’s why we’ve been making updates every week since launch to try and change the experience.”

Hall goes on to claim that the community feedback that a small team like his can contribute is one of the studio’s strengths.

He added, “I think that’s certainly a huge competitive advantage versus Bethesda or the big companies.

“We can do an interview with you and say, ‘Well, we screwed that up.’ This is our super power. This is how we get better.”

Unusually, Hall compares the success of his most popular game, DayZ, to “dying,” saying the whole process was confusing.

Recalling the change, Hall said, “Honestly, it’s like dying. That’s how I feel about it. You had your whole life before it and it was just completely torpedoed.

“Every relationship or friendship you have changes your entire life path. I was still in the army then.

“Well, that was just over. I remember one day, I think my first royalty check was $5 million (£4.3 million) so it was extremely confusing.

“And so I look back and I’m just proud that I survived without completely imploding, even though I may have messed up some of the DayZ stuff

“It’s ridiculous to say, ‘Oh, boohoo, someone made a lot of money and changed everything.’

“But I see it very strongly as before and after. You have to start deciding what is really important to you. And for me it makes games.

“That’s why one of the games I’ve shown here is a little tycoon game. Who knows how many people will actually play it, but I would make games even if nobody paid for them.”
