We never asked for it: Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal almost made Final Fantasy 15

Eidos Montreal was apparently about to do at a certain point Final Fantasy 15which has now been confirmed by a former art director.

Jonathan Jacque-Belletête, who used to work at Eidos Montreal, recently spoke to TrueAchievements and confirmed a long-standing rumor that the Canadian developer was working on Final Fantasy 15.

“Eidos Montreal brought back Deus Ex. I was the art director on Deus Ex: Human Revolution,” Jacque-Belletête told TrueAchievements of his time at the studio. “Then [I was] the executive art director of Mankind Divided. Then we tried to make Final Fantasy XV. Then they decided to bring it back to Japan – which I think was a huge mistake, but it’s still the truth. Ours was really, really cool.”

Actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a western-developed Final Fantasy 15. YouTuber Super Bunnyhop treated this as a rumor back in 2018, providing alleged details that Jacque-Belletête didn’t do in his recent interview with TrueAchievements.

According to the original Super BunnyHop video, Eidos Montreal had “some basic art, some basic game design in a super secret office”. Additionally, Eidos Montreal’s version of Final Fantasy 15 would have made it a “space opera RPG” with a love triangle of sorts.

Since Jacque-Belletête did not mention any of these details himself, it is impossible to say whether any of them are true or not. But that he simply confirms the existence of the project lends some credibility to Super BunnyHop’s claims.

Final Fantasy 15 had a notoriously choppy period of development, so it’s not a huge surprise to hear that Square Enix tries to outsource its development. And in the end, much of the DLC was canceled, leaving the project buggy but hugely popular.

While 15 may not have seen as much love as it deserved final fantasy 9 gets at least something, as the animated series could debut later this week.

And it seems Square Enix doesn’t have much love for Eidos Montreal either, having recently sold it along with it Tomb Raider and deus exto Embracer Group. We never asked for it: Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal almost made Final Fantasy 15
