We probably won’t miss our priests until they’re gone


Twenty-five years ago, when I was in college, the sociologist Fr. Liam Ryan wryly predicted that one day the church in Ireland would soon go down the rural Garda stations path: “The local presbytery will be closed, and two ministers will become half serve the county in a squad car.”

laughed along with everyone else at how absurd that comparison was, but like many prophets, Prof. Ryan was ahead of his time and his prediction today seems eerily accurate.
