Weather in Ireland: Met Éireann forecasts a sunny Saturday before thunderstorms and rain set in

A wet start to the weekend in the east will soon give way to dry weather from the west, with sunny spells stretching across much of the country on Saturday.

Showers are developing in the west, becoming more frequent throughout the evening with highs of 11-14 degrees.

Heavy and intermittent thunderstorms will sweep east across the country overnight, causing local flooding, Met Éireann warned.

The national forecaster issued a week-long flood advisory on Friday, saying heavy rains in the coming days will cause local flooding due to soggy soil and high river levels.

“Sunday will see sunny spells with occasional heavy showers, intermittently turning into longer rainy spells, particularly in the west and north-west. Some of the showers will be thunderstorm-like, with occasional flooding possible. Towards the evening, clouds will gather from the south-west, followed by persistent rain later. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with fresh to strong and gusty south to south west winds,” said Met Éireann forecaster Joanna Donnelly.

Rain will continue on Monday, increasing later in the afternoon with the possibility of embedded thunderstorms in the evening. The highest temperatures are between 13 and 15 degrees with a strong south wind.

Heavy rain eases east Monday night and will be followed by blustery showers from the west.

The weather forecast for next week shows a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, likely to be strongest and most frequent for the best-weathered Atlantic coast counties in the east. The highs range from 11-14.

Further forecasts point to a milder end to next week as strong southerly winds bring temperatures higher than usual for the time of year. Weather in Ireland: Met Éireann forecasts a sunny Saturday before thunderstorms and rain set in
