Weigh-in between Joshua and Usyk LIVE: Heavyweights hit the scales ahead of fight in Saudi Arabia

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk in a tense duel before the fight against Saudi Arabia

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will tip the scales today, a day after their seismic heavyweight title rematch in Saudi Arabia. Eleven months after their first meeting, Joshua and Usyk meet again as the Briton looks to regain the belts he lost to the undefeated Ukrainian in London. Jeddah will be the scene of their highly anticipated rematch, which will mark a turning point in Joshua’s career.

After the British star, 32, lost his titles in a shock injury defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr in June 2019, ‘AJ’ reclaimed the gold just six months later with a decision win over the Mexican. That rematch also took place in Saudi Arabia – in Riyadh – and Joshua was equal to the opportunity to avoid back-to-back defeats, but the pressure is on to do so again ahead of Saturday’s “Rage On The Red Sea”. No man has ever beaten Usyk during the 35-year-old’s professional career and he easily surpassed Joshua last September. Asked this week if Joshua would consider retiring in the event of another failure, the Brit said: “At the end of the day it’s up to me, it’s up to nobody else what I do with my career. It’s more of a personal choice.”

The last event before Saturday’s fight will be today’s weigh-in, with former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk expected to be heavier than the 221 pounds he weighed last September – compared to AJ’s 240 pounds then. Follow live updates from the cradles here:

The selection process for Joshua’s new coach, which took the Briton across the pond, caused speculation and intrigue in equal measure. It became arguably the strangest rematch build-up narrative. Eventually, Robert Garcia became the latest addition to Joshua’s team, the man tasked with reversing the outcome of last year’s showdown in London and doing what no manager has done before: finding a way past Usyk.

After Joshua’s longtime coach Rob McCracken retired from the 32-year-old’s coaching staff, Angel Fernandez will take on a more prominent role alongside Garcia.

But make no mistake, any credit or blame for the outcome of Joshua’s rematch with Usyk will rest on the shoulders of Garcia and Joshua, much more so than Fernandez.

Eddie Hearn wanted to be frank. When asked why the biggest boxing match of the year took place in Jeddah and not in New York, Las Vegas or London, the answer was clear.

“The problem right now is nobody wants to be honest,” said Anthony Joshua’s longtime promoter. “I feel very comfortable, especially in boxing, making decisions like that. It’s a price war where we have to contractually go to the venue that ultimately generates the most revenue for that fight – whether AJ likes it or not.”

Of course, selling a major sporting event to the highest bidder is nothing new, but the many critics of the staging of this fight would argue that something else is at play when the eyes of the world are on Saudi Arabia on Saturday night.

“I don’t know what that is,” Joshua said when asked if his blockbuster world title rematch against Oleksandr Usyk was the latest in a growing list of sportswear examples on the global sports scene.

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will be far from jeers, cheers, bullets, death and their own dreams when the first bell rings for their fight on Saturday night in Jeddah.

It’s been almost a year since Usyk exposed Joshua in front of 67,000 confused fans in north London; A lot has happened in the lives and times of both since that night at Spurs.

Armed and dangerous, Usyk prayed to survive a brutal war in his beloved Ukrainian homeland. He’s a national idol with a difference.

Joshua has spent 11 months searching for answers, changing his team and his mind for a fight he needs to win.

It has been a long, arduous road for Oleksandr Usyk since becoming world heavyweight champion and set to experience a historic night in Jeddah on Saturday. A spirited talent who has propelled the sport forward over the past decade by rising through the divisions with a combination of mesmerizing angles and majestic footwork that left Anthony Joshua stunned at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September.

But as Usyk writes another compelling chapter in the heavyweight division’s rich history, this fascinating talent has borne the burden of his status around the world as Ukraine fights for freedom in the war against Russia.

“I am motivated by the people of Ukraine who are fighting hard to defend our independence, defend our freedom and defend our culture that other people want to destroy and destroy,” Usyk said.
