“We’re disappointed where we are in the table” – Keith Long

Bohemians cross the Liffey tonight to take on UCD in the Belfield Bowl.

It’s an ideal opportunity for the Phibsboro side to put a frustrating couple of weeks behind them as they go into the game with a win in five. Another derby defeat in Dublin against Shamrock Rovers was followed by a 3-2 defeat by Derry City on Friday, in a home game littered with individual errors.

Promise Omochere has been brilliant this year, while top scorer Dawson Devoy and bubbly Ali Coote are deadly threats up front too.

However, the Bohemians’ problems lie in defense. The loss of James Talbot was a major blow while manager Keith Long recruited full-back Ryan Burke and centre-back Josh Kerr to bolster his leaky defence. Midfielder John O’Sullivan and winger Declan McDaid have also joined the club and Long expects the four to enhance the squad.

“We have good players at the club, but we need to get better,” Long said before the game.

“Ryan, Josh, John and Declan are making their debuts and we’re really excited about the momentum the new guys bring to the roster. We knew we had to improve in terms of our strength and depth and I believe they will add strength to the team. We’re disappointed where we are in the table and need to start winning games to improve our position. As simple as that.”

UCD remain bottom of the Premier Division but are still just three points off ninth and a place in the playoffs. Andy Myler’s side have put in some spirited performances this season, taking points from Sligo, Finn Harps and Dundalk. However, if they are to survive in the Premier Division, the students will have to do without what is perhaps their brightest star.

Ireland U-21 international Liam Kerrigan joins Serie B club Como this month. Myler is suspended tonight with Ger Barron set to replace the UCD manager on the sidelines. UCD held Bohemians to a 1-1 draw in the Bowl in March, but Bohs won 3-0 in the sides’ last clash in April.
