We’re struggling with broadband at home – and it feels like a fortnight of listening to music on hold has done irreparable things to my brain

Needless to say, moving is one of life’s most stressful events, but I’d bet moving broadband from one house to another ranks high as well. There has to be a word in the German language for the unique emotion you feel when, after a dozen or so calls to a broadband provider, you ask someone on the line to explain your sad situation again. It was the point earlier this week that I officially, to use official techie-speak, lost the rag.

It should have been easy. Two weeks before the move I made the obligatory phone call to let our broadband provider know we were moving. I was assured that we would be inconvenienced and would be without broadband for a day or two at most. Between then and now, things have gone confusingly wrong. I’ll spare you the boring details, but every single call to the broadband provider ended in a strange dead end after half an hour of waiting; vague assurances that something could probably be done. “So it needs to be fixed,” I told these people in every permutation of the phrase I could think of. “I don’t think so, but we’re not sure what to do,” came the reply.
