West Cork village sets record for most people named Michael Collins in one place

A small village in west Cork today claimed its own place in the history books after setting a new Guinness World Record for most people named Michael Collins in one place.

n a move that would certainly have impressed The Big Fella, O’Mahony’s Pub’s bold attempt to gather as many of its namesakes as possible has paid off.

As part of their Summer Festival and with various celebrations taking place today, the locals of Newcestown in Cork decided to mark the 100th anniversary of the legendary icon’s death in their own inimitable way.

Competitors gathered at O’Mahony’s Pub from early Sunday afternoon with a free pint for all competitors providing they could identify themselves with their full name.

Co-organizer Kieran O’Mahony said they had “no idea” how many would turn out for the event, but they ended up setting a new record of 75 attendees.

Participants’ ages ranged from 86 to a four-month-old baby named Michael Collins, with Sunday night’s 6pm gathering setting a new world record.

Attendees included Cork TD Michael Collins (Ind) alongside his son Michael Jnr and the event was moderated by Cork Mayor and TD Danny Collins (Ind).

“We had a huge crow here, we couldn’t believe it. We had people here from all over the country,” said Kieran O’Mahony.

“People might have thought it was a bit gimmicky, but it definitely captured the public’s imagination. We’re hoping to get even more people next year, we’re going to aim to get 100 here, so it went even better than we expected.” West Cork village sets record for most people named Michael Collins in one place
