We’ve been fined £100 just for driving into a car park for four minutes – it’s ridiculous

ENRAGED motorists have been fined £100 for driving into a car park for just four minutes.

An automated number plate system that scans vehicles as they drive in has been intercepting motorists for months.

It doesn’t leave people any wiggle room to find a spot, meaning even after visiting for just a few minutes without parking, they’ll get stung.

And those hit with penalties have called the strict order “ridiculous” and “a fraud,” reports CornwallLive.

Vicks Campion, whose family regularly uses Sea View Car Park in New Polzeath, near Padstow, Cornwall, said: “My poor mum got a ticket while she was in the car while I was checking in a wetsuit.

“We were exactly four minutes and 20 seconds.”

Another user, Hazel Belle Thompson, added: “I work locally and got caught for being 14 minutes late despite having to spend at least £40 every week in this car park.

“I lost an entire day’s wages to a 14-minute parking fine.”

And a third driver, Louise Wonnacott, who lives in the area, said there was a right-of-way via the parking lot to where she lives and she was caught four times simply driving through.

Adding to the confusion, local residents have complained that the signage at the car park, operated by Alliance Parking, is appalling.

The pay-and-display machine says users must cough from 7am to 11pm with no grace period, unlike others who offer 30 minutes.

However, below it also says that parking there from 10pm to 6am will be fined £100, meaning an hour’s overlap.

The sign goes on to say that payment starts from the moment you enter the barriers, which means anyone who drives in and cannot find a seat will be fined.

Alice Watts, who fell victim to the harsh rules, said: “I’ve been in and out, didn’t get out of my car because I was just using the car park to turn around, as I’ve done a million times over the years. fine.

“I have appealed. The fine was upheld. Never again.”

Local Melanie Phippen added: “This is disgusting. Not a good image for tourism.”

And Mark Keegan said: “This car park is making a fortune ripping off people, especially holidaymakers.

“I’ve told too many people to avoid this parking lot at all costs.”

Alliance Parking said it has now corrected the typo in the times on its sign, but denied anyone was ever fined for the error or for simply driving in and out.

A spokesman added: “We are aware of the minor typo on the signage and this was corrected early Saturday morning.

“Zero tickets were issued for parking after 10pm when payment was made.
