AN ARGUS letter writer said that a performance appraisal would root out cops “who after 15 or 20 years were still cops just driving around waiting for their retirement”.
That was, in my opinion, an insult to those involved and probably the biggest load of old cobblers I’ve ever read.
These special men and women are the backbone of every single UK police force, people who have a vast wealth of experience – ‘been there, done, seen, got the t-shirt’ – and without whom our police forces would probably be nothing but uniformed social services end.
I consider myself privileged in that for many years I had a number of really good friends who served the people of Sussex in the ranks to which the letter writer referred and each of them put the job first and put the people first before the promotion.
To suggest that they were “just driving towards their pensions” is totally unacceptable and flat out wrong.
