What are the findings about the key players in the ‘Wagatha Christie’ case?

Following Coleen Rooney’s victory in the libel lawsuit brought by Rebekah Vardy, the PA news agency examines the key findings made in Mrs Justice Steyn’s ruling on the high-profile defamation fight.

– Rebekah Vardy

Mrs Justice Steyn made several findings about Rebekah Vardy, the wife of the footballer who brought the lawsuit and her evidence, during the seven-day trial.

In her ruling, Ms Justice Steyn said that while it was “likely” that Ms Vardy’s agent at the time, Caroline Watt, had “taken direct action” to pass the information on to The Sun, Ms. Vardy “knew and sympathized with this behavior”.

She said Mrs Vardy was also “actively involved” in the behaviour, directing Ms Watt to Mrs Rooney’s personal Instagram account, sending her screenshots and directing her agent to the items. Specifically.

The judge also found that Ms Watt and Ms Vardy had “deliberately deleted or destroyed evidence” in the case, with “the pattern of working together to provide information to the press”.

Ms Justice Steyn noted that Ms Vardy found the evidence-giving process stressful and that she and her family had suffered “vile abuse”.

However, the judge also said that significant parts of Ms Vardy’s evidence were “unreliable”, at times “clearly inconsistent” with documentary evidence, “evasive” at other times. and she “generally does not want to give in to the facts, even though her evidence is unreliable”.

She further found it “probable” that Mrs Vardy was “seeing to force Mrs. Rooney to solve a case that appears to have been fatally impaired, and thus avoid a trial” by attempt to use witness briefs on behalf of journalists who falsely claimed they would say neither Ms Vardy nor Ms Watt were the sources of the articles.

Mrs Justice Steyn later said in her ruling that Ms Vardy had “deliberately chosen” to sit behind Ms Rooney in a Euro 2016 match, dismissing her evidence as “unreliable”. trust”.

Mrs Justice Steyn added: “I don’t accept that she would happily blur the background.

However, Ms Justice Steyn said the evidence linking Ms Vardy to the brief “Secret Wag” column in The Sun was “thin” and did not support Ms Rooney’s defense of the truth.

Justice Steyn also accepted that Ms Vardy regretted giving a 2004 News of the World interview about her alleged sexual encounter with Peter Andre.

– Caroline Watt

Ms Vardy’s friend and former special agent Ms. Watt was described by the Supreme Court judge as “an important witness to the matters in question”.

Mrs. Justice Steyn found that Ms. Vardy had given information to Ms. Watt when she learned that Ms. Watt would later give that information to a journalist for The Sun.

She also said that while Ms Vardy made the decision about when to give details to the press, “Mrs Watt acted on her instructions”.

The judge said the evidence was “completely inconsistent with the argument that Ms. Watt acted alone without Ms. Vardy’s consent”.

Justice Steyn also said it can be inferred that Ms Vardy and Ms Watt “jointly leaked more information from their personal Instagram accounts during 2017-2019” compared with the eight posts in the smear case.

The judge later found that Ms Vardy had chosen not to call Ms Watt to give evidence in part because she knew her evidence “would be deemed untrue”.

Ms Watt was supposed to give evidence in favor of Ms Vardy, however she withdrew the evidence before trial, with the court saying it was due to health concerns.

She said: “I am forced to conclude that the main reason Mrs Watt was so reluctant to give evidence, and under adverse pressure from doing so, was that she knew that much of the evidence in her statements she is not true. “

Ms. Watt is the owner of the phone that fell into the North Sea after the preliminary hearing, shortly after the order to inspect the device.

In a witness statement, Ms Watt said the loss was a “real accident” due to the fast-flowing water and her hand being weak while sailing in Scotland.

However, Ms Justice Steyn said: “The timing is impressive… the likelihood of the loss that Ms Watt describes as accidental is very small.”

– Coleen Rooney

Ms Rooney, the footballer’s wife defending the statement, was described by Mrs Justice Steyn as “an honest and trustworthy witness”.

She said in her ruling: “She sought to answer the questions she was asked without any evasion, and without conveying any sense that she was making the answer has been prepared in advance.”

Mrs Justice Steyn accepted Ms Rooney’s evidence that she had told no one about her “surgery” or fabricated posts, until she published the viral disclosure post in October 2019 .

– Wayne Rooney

The Supreme Court judge said Mr Rooney “gave honest and credible evidence” during his time at the witness box.

Mrs Justice Steyn accepted his evidence that in 2016 then-England coach Roy Hodgson asked Mr Rooney to ask Jamie Vardy to speak to his wife about her media appearances .

“Mr Rooney’s evidence shows that he was asked to speak to Mr. Vardy, and that he did so, although it was an awkward issue for him to raise, but it was all true. ” she said.

– Jamie Vardy

Ms. Vardy’s husband did not give evidence at the trial and attended with his wife for a day.

The court was told Mr Vardy had denied claims in an article in The Independent that Mr Rooney “negotiated” with Mr Vardy over Ms Vardy’s media records in 2016.

Mrs Justice Steyn said: “I keep in mind Mr Vardy’s simultaneous denial in his message to Ms Vardy, but that is more likely to reflect Mr Vardy’s understandable choice not to be his wife. upset by conveying what he may consider to be less reprehensible than any dishonesty or inaccuracies in the evidence Rooney presented in court. “

She continued: “As Mr Rooney readily admits, he has no way of knowing if Mr Vardy told his wife about the conversation he had with Mr Vardy. It seems, given Mrs Vardy’s reaction to seeing the Independent article, that Mr Vardy did not. “
