SNAPCHAT emojis are just one of many features that users can enjoy when using the popular photo sharing app.
But what does the yellow heart emoji mean and why is it on my friends list? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is the Yellow Heart Emoji on Snapchat?
If you use Snapchat a lot, you might have noticed that a yellow heart emoji appears next to some names on your friends list.
They always appear on the far right of every chat.
The emojis that appear next to your friends’ names are actually called “friend emojis.”
And according to Snapchat, “they’re a fun way to learn a little more about your friends.”
The yellow heart is just one of many different friend emojis that the app uses.
What does the yellow heart mean?
The yellow heart emoji will appear next to your number one best friend on Snapchat if you are also their number one best friend.
This simply means that this is the person with whom you exchange the most snaps.
In the app’s early years, Snapchat also had a similar best friend feature.
However, instead of an emoji, your best Snapchat friends were created in a list and they could be seen by all users.
In 2015, Snapchat bosses decided to remove this feature for privacy reasons and replace it with using emojis instead.
Now only you can see your best friends – so your privacy is protected.
What do the other emojis on Snapchat mean?
Besides the yellow heart emoji, there are many other emojis that can appear next to some names on your friends list.
Each emoji has a different meaning – giving you a glimpse into your friendship with each user.
Here’s what each emoji symbolizes:
Baby face emoji
This Snapchat emoji appears next to recently added friends.
You can expect to see this emoji pop up a lot if you’re new to the app.
Red heart emoji
Just like the yellow heart emoji, the red heart symbolizes that you are the best besties.
However, it differs from the yellow heart in that it indicates that you have been friends for at least two weeks.
Pink heart emoji
A red heart may suddenly disappear from the friends list and be replaced by the pink heart emoji instead.
That simply means you’ve been Snapchat’s best friends for two months.
A fire emoji symbolizes a snap streak.
A Snapstreak is when you and a friend have snapped at least three days in a row.
A number will appear next to the fire emoji indicating how many days your Snapstreak has been active.
However, in order to get a snapstreak, you must send a red snap to keep the flame burning – a blue chat doesn’t count.
This emoji is quite an achievement for any Snapchat user.
If you see the 100 emojis on your friends list, it’s because you’ve had a Snapstreak with that user for 100 days.
Well, that’s a happy snap.
Birthday cake emoji
With this emoji, the clue is in the name.
When logging into Snapchat, the app requires each user to enter their date of birth.
So if you see a birthday cake emoji next to one of your friends, it means it’s their birthday – so be sure to send a Happy Birthday message.
The glitter emoji might be glowing on your friends list — and here’s why.
This gold emoji shows that you are in a group with that specific user.
Don’t panic if the hourglass emoji appears next to your friends’ names – it doesn’t mean you’ve lost your Snapstreak.
What it means, however, is that it’s time to snap as your streak is about to end.
Simply sending a red snap will make the emoji disappear and your snapstreak will remain.
The smiling emoji shows that these users are among your best and closest friends on the app.
If you use the app a lot and send a lot of snaps back and forth, this emoji will show up – and you can see it next to some of your friends’ names.
However, that doesn’t mean they’re your number one best friend.
This emoji actually gives you a little peek into your other friends’ best friends list.
When the grimace emoji appears, it means that your number one best friend is also the user’s number one best friend.
It simply means that you both interact a lot with the same person.
If the sunglasses emoji appears, it’s because you and that user share a best friend.
But remember – that doesn’t count for your number one best friend.
Unlike the other Snapchat emojis, this one doesn’t appear automatically.
Instead, when you pin your conversation with them, you’ll see a Pin emoji on your friends list.
This will automatically send that user to the top of your feed, making it easier to send snaps.
You can learn more about Snapchat emojis by opening the app.
Just find your settings, go to Manage and there you will see the option to click on your friend’s emojis.
