A new anti-wrinkle drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday, marking a shift in facial injection treatments that could rival Botox injections.
Drugmaker Revance Therapeutics’ anti-wrinkle injection Daxxify has been shown in studies to temporarily improve moderate to severe frown lines for almost twice as long as its competitor, Botox, the company said.
According to Revance, Daxxify can provide wrinkle improvements for about six months. Traditional botox improves worry lines for about three to four months, the Daily Mail reported.
Daxxify acts as a neuromuscular blocker, similar to Botox, freezing muscles to prevent wrinkles from appearing. Unlike its competitors, Daxxify uses peptides for formula stabilization instead of animal or human proteins.
According to the company, more than 2,700 patients have participated in clinical trials with the drug with “safe and well-tolerated results” as no serious adverse events have been reported with its use. Over 4,200 injections were performed for the study.
The average effect of the Daxxify injection lasted six months, with some participants seeing results lasting up to nine months.
Although the FDA has approved the drug for use, it warned that the effects of the injection could spread to other areas of the body or cause generalized muscle weakness or breathing difficulties, like toxin-based treatments do.
According to Revance, common side effects reported during clinical trials included headache and eyelid ptosis — where the upper eyelid hangs over the eye after the injection — and facial paresis, or muscle weakness in the face.
With the injectable facial market valued at $3.2 billion, Daxxify could transform the industry and offer what the company describes as “long-lasting results and high patient satisfaction” by requiring fewer injections each year than injectables the competition.
At the time of writing, it was unclear what the price of a Daxxify injection would cost, but Revance said it had plans to launch the drug in the U.S. through high-volume injectors in select areas before launching it commercially.
Botox typically costs between $250 and $500 per injection per treatment area, according to the Daily Mail. Botox injections have been around in the US since 1989, with sales of $4.7 billion a year, according to the news outlet.
