The competition’s inaugural season was widely regarded as a huge success as a new breed of fan took an interest in the sport – the Lords final was a sell-out crowd of over 25,000.
The packed seats at the tournament were filled not only with beer-loving men, but also with children – who took 20% of the tickets, a huge jump from previous years of the T20 Blast.
In the first year, the Oval Invincibles were crowned champions of the women’s tournament and Southern Brave took home the men’s trophy.
The main draft for the men’s tournament is now scheduled to take place on April 5, 2022. Here’s what you need to know about how the contest and draft work.
How is The Hundred different from other forms of cricket?
The Hundred is different in many ways. The most obvious is the number of balls thrown – only 100 per side.
This is less than the previous shortest cricket format, T20, which consisted of 120 balls pitched per innings.
Another difference between The Hundred and other forms of domestic British cricket is the way the teams are organised, with the tournament structure breaking away from the decades-old district-based transitional system. Instead, it will be replaced with a franchise model based on cities and regions.
However, what is still the same as in more traditional forms of the game is that whoever gets more runs wins. Lose all 11 batsmen and your innings will end.
But whereas in the past – and this is really just a detail – both teams tried to get the maximum possible total, the new format sees the first team counting up and the second team batting to finish those runs.
The last major differences are in the way the overs are bowled, with five balls being sent to the batsman instead of the traditional six.
And before the overs alternated the end from which they were bowled, the new game looks two overs from each end to halve the time spent resetting the field after each over.
How does the Hundred Draft work?
The draft is a style of team selection based on the American sports book.
This particular draft will be conducted in two phases, with each side being allowed to host a total of 15 players.
Each of the 15 will have at least one English Red Ball Tester signed – there are 20 centrally signed English players.
In most scenarios, the other 14 players are drafted, with each side limited to three foreign players.
Some of the 20 may be allowed to miss the tournament, with four of the players being allowed to keep as homegrown players.
No team may retain more than two centrally signed players from the previous season.
In total, the men’s teams are allowed to keep 10 players from their 2021 team and can keep any national or international player signed with them in 2021.
All teams must reserve a spot for wildcard selection.
Each team takes turns filling all the salary bands they have open and picking players from a pool.
The order that teams can select is as follows:
- London spirit
- Welsh fire
- Manchester Originals
- Superchargers from the north
- Oval Invincibles
- Trent missiles
- Birmingham Phoenix
- Southern Brave
Each player in the draft pool has a reserve price and cannot be purchased by a team for less than that amount.
If a team wants to spend more on a player, they can.
A wildcard selection will also be made at a later date closer to the start of the tournament.
You can also choose a wild card abroad at a later date – both places will be announced in June.
At the time of writing were the Welsh Fire have the most places to fill. A total of 17 overseas players and 25 domestic players will be put into teams.
Who are the biggest stars in The Hundred Men’s Draft?
Most of the biggest names in cricket are already on teams, having been carried over from the previous year. However, the following pages are available for recruitment.
David Warner, Kieron Pollard, Aaron Finch and Andre Russell are all in contention as the top foreign players, while Joe Clarke and Laurie Evans are some of the strongest domestic options available.
In total there are players from 16 countries to choose from, with 250 players from the national side of the draft to choose from.
What are the main criticisms of the hundred?

The main criticism of The Hundred has come predominantly from the conservative side of the fanbase, who argue that the tournament is breaking with many cricket traditions.
While some would argue it ain’t broke don’t fix it, others have questioned why the ECB adopted a format not played by any other country, especially when the UK already has a perfectly viable T20 tournament in this one Form has the explosion.
