British Gas customers have complained of “faulty” smart meters showing larger than normal readings – or no readings at all.
Frustrated customers have spoken to The Mirror about the problems with their British Gas smart meters, with claims that they are not working, displaying large readings and are frustrated at not being able to understand the problem or be able to fix it quickly.
Jamie Watkinson-Harvey described British Gas’ smart meters as “just not fit for purpose” and told The Mirror that one meter even claimed it was using £2,400 a day.
Charlotte, who described herself as a “disgruntled” customer, says she’s had problems with her smart meter since February.
Another customer, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Mirror: “Both my gas and electricity are supplied by British Gas. My smart meter stopped working on March 26th.
“Unfortunately no technician is available until July 14th.”

If your meter doesn’t work
British Gas say if your meter is damaged they can send someone to make sure you and your home are safe. You can call them Pay-as-you-go requests Hotline manned Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm for general inquiries and 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies.
If you don’t have a usage-based meter, you can call the utility company account inquiries Line.
What if my meter is damaged?
If you think your meter is damaged, please contact the gas emergency service.
If you notice sparks, smoking or burning coming from your meter, British Gas says you should call the fire brigade.
Turn off all your devices and call yours local power distributor.

What if my meter reading hasn’t changed or is going backwards?
This could mean that your meter is incorrectly recording your energy consumption.
If you have a pay-as-you-go counter, call them Pay-as-you-go requests line as soon as possible to ensure you only pay for what you actually used.
If you don’t have a pay-as-you-go meter, call account inquiries Line.

Energy update on April 9th
British Gas issued a statement on its website on Saturday, saying: “We are receiving a large number of customers trying to contact us so wait times are much longer than usual.
“We understand this is a worrying time. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your bills, reducing your energy use can help. Check out a few Tips for saving energy.
“There’s also support from our charities, if you are effort to pay.
“Learn more about the changes in the energy market.”
