Families are more out and about at this time of year and that can bring its own risks, especially when younger children are involved.
We all know how fidgety they can be in their seats and how easily distracted they can be, especially when they’re uncomfortable in warm weather.
Make sure they are in properly fitting child restraint systems. And explain to the elderly the risk of not being properly buckled up.
Double check that the car seat you have fits your child; Research has shown that up to two-thirds of car seats are incorrectly installed.
As a driver, you are legally responsible for ensuring that all passengers are securely fastened.
I’m often surprised at how careless parents/drivers can be in this regard.
Make sure you activate the child safety locks on your car doors so the little ones cannot open them while the car is stationary.
Also, make sure you lock the power windows to prevent children from opening them, especially in hot weather.
And never leave children unattended in the car.
