WhatsApp is testing a strange new feature that will change your group chats forever

WHATSAPP is working on a big change to your group chats.

An early version of an upcoming update revealed that Meta’s own chat app is testing a way to manage multiple groups at once.

The brand new feature called Communities has been in development for months and will be made available in a future update.

According to WhatsApp investigators WABetaInfo, each community is like a giant “group” for your existing WhatsApp groups.

In a post this week, the site, which trawls through early beta versions of WhatsApp updates for upcoming features, detailed how communities will work.

Groups are one of the most popular ways to chat within Facebook’s own app.

But having multiple groups can be chaotic at times — and hard to keep track of.

The WhatsApp sniffer dogs at WABetaInfo previously uncovered images and references to “Community” on WhatsApp.

The full features are now in beta and provide a way to keep groups organized.

When it’s in place, you’ll be able to notify multiple groups at once.

For example, you might have a study group that contains many smaller groups.

Or maybe your neighborhood would have a community that splits into separate groups to educate and complain about neighborhood issues.

“It’s a private place where group admins have more control over some groups on WhatsApp, available in a future update of the app,” WABetaInfo said.

“It’s like a group chat, and group admins can link other groups in the community.”

WABetaInfo added: “It will be possible to reach everyone at once by sending messages to all participants of these groups connected to the community.”

WhatsApp hasn’t confirmed when — or if — this feature will roll out to the general public.
