When Charles chats with Sinn Féin and almost snubs stalwart Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP should take the hint

Small moments can be as meaningful as big events. The Hillsborough Castle lineup showed Charles III relaxed and at ease with Sinn Féin wanting to remove Northern Ireland from his kingdom and somewhat upset with the DUP keen to remain in it. The new king’s incongruity, at odds with republicanism rather than unionism, was an instructive start to his reign.

Seeing the pomp of this reception line, helpfully televised, I recalled the time I was introduced to Charles when I was a young journalist for the Press Association in London. An aide with a military title approached where I was floating with my notebook full of doodles about a speech Charles had just made and said the (then) Prince of Wales would like to be introduced.
