THERE IS an easy way to up your Instagram game that won’t take too much time.
Posting at specific times is likely to increase your engagement by pushing your posts to the top of your friends’ feeds.
Why are certain times better for getting engaged?
Users have pondered for years whether Instagram Posts get more exposure based on the time of day they are posted.
The idea is that at certain times of the day, like lunch or after work, more people are on the app.
Certain days are also said to be better for engagement.
For example, on Sundays people are more likely to sit on the sofa at home and scroll their social media feeds.
However, the theory is clouded by the mysterious workings of the Instagram feed.
Who sees your posts and when depends on a number of factors, including the time of day they are uploaded.
Other factors include the follower’s potential interest in the post, their relationship with you, how often you post, and more.
As such, any theories about the best time to share content on the app should be taken with a grain of salt.
When is the best time to post?
Last year, social media marketing company Later analyzed 35 million Instagram posts to get to the bottom of the mystery.
They discovered that the best time to post on Instagram — the time that generates the most likes and comments — is 6 a.m. local time.
They found the best days to upload are Saturdays and Sundays.
Posts published on Wednesdays between 10am and 4pm and Thursdays between 9pm and 11pm have the lowest engagement rates.
That makes these days the worst for a release, according to Later.
The company wrote, “By posting earlier in the day, accounts benefit from less competition while still being able to tap into users’ traffic during their first scroll of the day — even if that’s a few hours after the post was shared.”
“By being one of the first to post each day, you give your content the best chance of being seen by your audience, regardless of when they’re personally most active on the app.”
According to Later, most posts worldwide are shared between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. every day.
However, other research has crowned other, later times of the day as better for engagement.
For example, research by marketing firm Sprout Social found that the best day to post was Tuesday, while the worst was Sunday.
Their analysis of Instagram data from 20,000 customers found that 11am on weekdays was the best time to share content.
The moral of the story is that it’s difficult to question Instagram’s ever-changing (and fickle) algorithm.
