The brother of a development worker beheaded by IS says the brutal murder led to their parents’ deaths.

Mike Haines says he forgave cruel killer Alexanda Kotey for the disgusting crime.

But he says the loss of David, 44, has left her parents, Mary and Chris, devastated.

London-born Kotey, 38, was sentenced to life in prison in the US last week.

He was a member of a terrorist cell nicknamed the Beatles because of their British accent.

They tortured and executed hostages in Syria, including David from Perth, Scotland. He was murdered in 2014. His body was never found.

His brother Mike, 55, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain yesterday how his mother “faded” after the death of their son.

Mrs Haines, of Ayr, Scotland, died the following year aged 81.

Her husband died in 2017 at the age of 80.

Mike said, “When David was murdered, my mother slowly gave up life as she slowly faded away.”

He said his father was in the early stages of dementia when David was kidnapped, adding: “In the 48 hours after I told my parents, my family, that David was gone, his dementia got so much worse. Again it slowly faded away.”

Kotey admitted eight counts related to the kidnapping, torture and execution of hostages from 2012 to 2015.

His compatriot Beatle El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, will be sentenced in August.

The couple listened to emotional statements from the families of the victims in a Virginia court on Friday.

David’s daughter Bethany, 24, told Kotey: “I hope you’re rotting in hell.”

Mike, from Dundee, who now runs the educational organization Global Acts of Unity, told Kotey: “You and your cohort have had power over me and my family for too long now.

“I’m not willing to let that happen anymore. I forgive you.”

He said Kotey’s only reaction was a blink. He added he didn’t feel the anger and hate he expected, just “closure.”

Another member of the terrorist cell, Mohammed Emwazi, 27, “Jihadi John”, died in a drone strike in Syria in 2015.

A fourth member, Aine Davis, 38, was arrested in Turkey in 2017.
