YOUTUBE went live back in February 2005 – and is now a video streaming titan.
Its creators Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim developed such a good app that it was sold to Google in October 2006 for £1.29 billion ($1.65 billion) and is now the second largest search engine in the world.
When was YouTube created?
A YouTuber is anyone who creates video content for the website.
This makes co-founder Jawed Karim the first YouTuber to upload an 18-second video titled “Me at the Zoo” in 2005.
Over the years the definition of YouTuber has taken on new meaning and now people can make a living from their YouTube accounts and become professional YouTubers.
Professional YouTubers make their living from advertising revenue, which YouTube says can generate as much as $18 per 1,000 ad views Forbes.com.
The most subscribed YouTubers today are:
- T series with 147 million subscribers
- PewDiePie with 106 million subscribers
- Cocomelon – nursery rhymes with 89 million subscribers.
One of the latest T-Series videos entitled Hanuman Chalisa received 141,711 views in the first 10 hours. It is estimated that the channel could have made around $2,550.79 from this.
However, the amount paid depends on a variety of factors, including the number of views each video receives, the number of clicks an ad receives, ad quality, and video length
What was the first YouTube video?
The very first YouTube video was created by Jawed Kawim on April 23, 2005.
It was titled Me at the Zoo and featured Karim standing in front of an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo and saying, “All right, so here we are in front of the elephants.
“The cool thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long trunks and that’s cool.
“And that’s pretty much all there is to say.”
Since the video was uploaded, it has received around 106 million views, 3.7 million upvotes and 7,576,000 comments.
What was the first YouTube video to hit 1 million views?
The first video to reach a million views on YouTube was a Nike ad featuring soccer star Ronaldinho.
It was uploaded in October 2005 and the original material is no longer on the site but has been re-uploaded by other users.
The clip shows the Brazilian footballer trying on a new pair of boots and doing keep-ups before firing the ball at goal from outside the box.
It then bounces off the bar and back to Ronaldinho, who keeps the ball in the air.
He bounces it off the goalposts and repeats the trick several times.
The video, titled Touch of Gold, became the blueprint for the concept of a viral video.
Another notable YouTube video is South Korean singer Psy’s Gangnam Style.
The video was so successful that it became the most viewed video on the site with over 3.7 billion views.
This broke YouTube’s view counter by exceeding the maximum.
Programmers then changed the code for the site so that the view count increased to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808.
That’s more than nine trillion.
