Apple is pretty good at keeping old devices running, even though they’re getting really slow.

In general, an iPhone is considered obsolete if Apple stopped selling it more than seven years ago.

Obsolete means Apple no longer offers hardware service repairs.

Which iPhones are obsolete?

If you own one of these and are still using it, it’s officially a legacy iPhone.

  • iPhone 3GS (8GB)
  • iPhone 3GS 16GB, 32GB

  • iPhone 4 16GB, 32GB
  • iPhone 4 GSM (8GB) Black
  • iPhone 4S (8GB)

It’s hardly surprising considering the latest on this list, the iPhone 4S, was released in 2011.

Apple defines “vintage” iPhones that it stopped selling for more than five and less than seven years.

That means they’re near the nearest chopping block.

The vintage list includes:

  • iPhone 6plus

So if you’ve managed to keep using an outdated iPhone for so long, it’s probably worth getting a new one – not least it can be a major Security risk with old software.

Those on the vintage list may last a little longer, but some are also vulnerable to hackers as there’s no version of iOS available for them.
