Since 2014, more than 375 miles of the UK’s busiest roads have been converted to smart motorways.
Project, already introduced to ease congestion, which now covers large swaths of England as well as parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Here’s all you need to know.
Where are smart motorways located in the UK?
ONE traffic management engineering the use of hard shoulder as an additional lane was first used on the M42 motorway in 2006.
A year later, plans were announced to extend a smart motorway scheme across sections of the M6 motorway at a cost of £150 million.
The region’s smart highways include:
M6 – Intersection 4 to 10a (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
M6 – Intersection 10a to 13 (Full lane running)
M42 – Intersection 3a to M40 – Intersection 16 (Controlled)
M42 – Intersection 7 to 9 (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
Portions of the M25 have used variable speed limits, since they were first installed in 1995.
But in 2007, the Department of Transport decided to widen the sections under a new smart motorway scheme.
Now they include:
M1 – Intersection 6a-10 (Controlled)
M1 – Intersection 10-13 (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
M3 – Intersection 2-4a (All lanes)
M20 – Intersection 4 to 7 (Controlled)
M25 – Intersection 2 to 3 (Controlled)
M25 – Intersection 5 to 7 (Full lane running)
M25 – Intersection 7 to 8 (Controlled)
M25 – Intersection 10 to 16 (Controlled)
M25 – Intersection 23 to 27 (Full lane running)
M25 – Intersection 27 to 30 (Controlled)
M26 – Intersection 16 to 23 (Controlled)
Nottinghamshire and West Yorkshire
In 2010, a £2 billion contract was announced to extend the smart motorway scheme to segments M1, M4, M5, M6, M60 and M62.
Today they include:
M1 – Intersection 25 to 28 (Controlled)
M1 – Intersection 28 to 31 (Run on the entire lane)
M1 – Intersection 32 to 35a (All lanes)
M1 – Intersection 39 to 42 (Run on the entire lane)
M62 – Intersection 25 to 30 (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
Bristol and Greater Manchester
Over the past five years, plans have been extended to the South West and North West with work completed in Bristol and Manchester:
M4 – Junction 19 to 20 (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
M5 – Intersection 15 to 17 (Dynamic stiff shoulder)
M60 – Intersection 8 to 18 (Controlled)
M62 – Intersection 18 to 20 (Full lane running)
Belfast, Edinburgh, Fife
Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland have seen the introduction of smart motorway techniques – sometimes referred to as “smart transport systems”.

M9 to M90
M90-to A823 (M)
Which roads will become the next smart car roads?
Although Confirming the suspension of smart motorway projects in January 2022, National Highway lines will continue to operate on the roads under construction.
The Department of Transportation said all will open “with technology in place to detect stopped vehicles”.

- M3 intersection from 3 to 12
- M4 Intersection 3 to 12
- M6 Junction 13 to 16
- M6 Junction J121 to J26
- M27 Intersection 4 to 11
- M40 Intersection 6 to 8
