Where is Sievierodonetsk in Ukraine as Zelensky calls Putin’s fight ‘most brutal’ – World News

Volodymyr Zelensky has published an impassioned plea for military equipment in the fight against Vladimir Putin’s forces in eastern Ukraine, calling the fighting in Sievierodonetsk one of the “most brutal battles in Europe”.

Putin’s war in Ukraine has entered its final grisly phase, as the country’s battered east is the scene of a brutal and grueling battle.

Thousands are said to have died since Vladimir Putin’s February 24 invasion, with the death toll rising at an alarming rate on both sides.

Speaking to the BBC, Presidential Advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Mykhaylo Podolyak said between 100 and 200 soldiers die every day.

Putin’s grotesque and nightmarish war has resulted in the names of many cities becoming synonymous with horror.

Nowhere more so than in Mariupol in the south-east of the country, where troops and civilians were besieged for months, culminating in a brutal last stand at the Azovstal steelworks.

Now a new city has added its name to the list of places associated with the violence there – Sievierodonetsk.

Where is Sieverodonetsk located?

Sievierodonetsk is located in eastern Ukraine, in Luhansk Oblast – one of the two parts of the Donbass region that, along with Donetsk, have become a focal point of the war.

Nestled in the north-east of the Siverskyi Donets River, it has become of high tactical importance for both sides of the war.

All bridges into the city from neighboring Lysychansk across the river are said to have now been rendered unusable, leaving Ukrainian defenders unable to evacuate the remaining civilians still stuck there.

Two bridges are said to have been destroyed and the third is old and not safe.

70% of the city is now said to be under Russian control, although Ukrainian troops are said to still be able to transport their wounded to hospitals.

At the time of writing, it is believed that there were about 10,000 civilians in the besieged city, only a tenth of the pre-war population of 100,000.

Lysychansk, on the west bank of the river, is one of the few areas in Luhansk not under Russian control, although it is reported to be regularly shelled by Russia.

President Zelensky has expressed concern about the battle and delivered a speech to emphasize the need for additional weapons to support the battle there.

He said: “Only a sufficient number of modern artillery secures our advantage.”

“The battles in Donbass will surely go down in military history as one of the most brutal battles in Europe.

“Every day we draw our partners’ attention to the fact that only a sufficient number of modern artillery for Ukraine will ensure our advantage.

“And stop Russian torture of Ukrainian Donbass,” he added.
