The longest reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth the second has died aged 96, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

As the death of the queen is announced, raises questions about what happens next as Britain experiences its first transition to monarchy in 70 years.

After ten days of mourning, the Queen’s funeral takes place, continuing the tradition of a national mourning period.

The funeral service is expected to take place at Westminster Abbey and will be the first sovereign funeral to be held there since 1760.

Although the service will be held at Westminster Abbey, the Queen is expected to be buried privately.

In the presence of her family at a private funeral at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, where she spent much of her final years.

She is buried alongside her father King George VI, her sister Princess Margaret and her late husband Prince Philip.
