Who are CREW? By Martha Wilson, Davison CE High School
Anyone walking through Worthing town center may have noticed an interesting new shop front in the past few weeks. It turns out this is home to the Climate Resilience Center Worthing (or CREW for short), a recently registered charity set up to inform and encourage action on climate change within the community.
CREW officially opened on Worthing High Street in the first week of January 2023. However, they are also part of a network of around 40 Climate Emergency Centers (CECs) across the UK. While CREW is their own charity, they work with the Climate Emergency Centers (as well as other local organizations) to achieve common goals.
Every Wednesday night, CREW hosts talks and events to raise awareness for various local campaigns that vary each week. These conversations aim to connect local groups that don’t have their own physical space and guide people in the direction of campaigns they may wish to contribute to. They also run a “climate café” designed to support those struggling with fear of the climate crisis.
As a non-profit organization, they rely on volunteers and donations to fund projects and keep CREW open. Sean Hellet, who works with CREW, said:
“One of our main goals is to act as a hub for all these other people to operate from.” … “There’s a whole list of other local organizations that we want to bring together because we’re all working on the same issues.”
With many people unable to volunteer, many of the campaigns CREW publishes aim to encourage small lifestyle changes to work towards a better future for the environment and ourselves.
“The problem is, while a lot of people know about these things, I don’t think they see the implications.”
Whether it’s reducing animal products, using more public transportation, or just simply recycling, there are ways we can all do our bit for the good of the planet. Put simply, that is their message.
