THE Great British Menu is back with 32 new chefs representing eight different regions or countries for its seventeenth series.
The series highlights outstanding culinary talent across the UK with chefs going head-to-head in an attempt to secure a spot in the coveted party. Find out here who will be competing for this year’s series.
Who is The Great British Menu 2022 contestant?
Sally Abe, The Pem, London
Sally is from Mansfield in Nottingham and is a chef consultant at The Pem restaurant in the Conrad London Hotel in St James’s.
She studied hotel management and culinary arts in Sheffield and then worked at The Savoy and then Claridge’s before starting five years under Brett Graham at the two-Michelin-starred The Ledbury.
She stepped down in 2017 as head chef at The Harwood Arms in Fulham, where she struggled to build a loyal team and maintain the restaurant’s Michelin star rating.
Sally opened The Pem in July 2021, in which the restaurant was inspired by Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, whose family once nicknamed her ‘Pem’.
Sally was also named Square Meal’s Female Chef of the Year in 2021.
Her cooking style is British, seasonal and chic. Her personalized menu incorporates local produce from some of the UK’s most important events.
Ben Orpwood, Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay, London
Ben was born in Cambridge and began his career at Queens College.
He is an avid Asian foodie and has spent most of his career cooking in places like Australia and Asia.
He has worked at Zuma in London, Istanbul, Dubai, and Toko in Sydney.
Ben sees the UK having more opportunities to invite him so he returns to open a new restaurant, Sexy Fish.
Ben had the opportunity to work with Gordon Ramsay to develop a restaurant based on Asian cuisine and he has been the Executive Chef at Lucky Cat for the past three years.
His dining style is Asain influence and transcends the boundaries of fine dining.
Liam Dillon, The Boat Inn, Lichfield
Liam is from Lichfield and is very competitive.
His love for food started when he was a child spending his evenings by the spokes, making bread and baking.
Liam has worked at some of the UK’s top kitchens such as Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley, Five Fields in Chelsea and Tom Sellers’ Story in Bermondsey, London
He has also traveled the world with appearances in Sydney, Copenhagen and New York.
He then returned to the UK in 2017 as chef-owner of The Boat Inn.
Since then, the pub has become an award-winning and Michelin-recommended modern British restaurant.
His menu for the competition is creative and innovative.
Harvey Perttola, Six Restaurant, Nottingham
Harvey is from Nottingham and is the new head chef of Restaurant Six at Trent Bridge cricket ground.
His career in food began at the age of fourteen when he was an apprentice chef at Opus in Birmingham, before moving to Hampton Manor.
He is Birmingham’s youngest chef at the age of twenty-four at Maribel Restaurant and finished second in the Chef Stagiaire competition in 2017.
He was also a finalist in the British Culinary Federation’s 2018 Best Young Chef competition.
Harvey would describe his dish as modern British with a classic French twist.
