Who invented Wordle?
Wordle was created by software engineer and former Reddit employee, Josh Wardle and launched in October 2021.
The title of the internet word game is a play on the Wardle surname, hence Wordle.
The inventor originally devised the game during lockdown for himself and his wife, but it’s now been played by more than three million players worldwide.
Sharing on Twitter, Wardle said he was “overwhelmed” by the response he received for his work.
He said: “It has been unbelievable to watch the game bring joy to so many people and I feel so grateful for the personal stories some of you have shared with me – from Wordle uniting Distant family members, inciting friendly competition, to medical rehabilitation advocates.
“On the other hand, I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t overwhelming.
“After all, I’m just one person, and it’s important to me that, as Wordle grows, it will continue to provide a great experience for everyone.”
Who owns Wordle?
On January 31, 2022, the game creator sold Popular brain teasers to The New York Times for an undisclosed amount.
Both sides broke the news on the transaction date.

“I am extremely pleased to announce that I have reached an agreement with The New York Times to have them take over the running of Wordle in the future,” Wardle said.
The Wordle inventor continued: “If you’ve followed Wordle’s story, you know that the NYT games played an important role in its origins and so this step felt very natural to me.”
