Who is eligible for a Covid-19 booster shot this fall?

That UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced that all over 50s will be offered a Covid-19 booster shot and a flu shot this autumn.

However, the change follows the committee in light of the Distribution of variants BA.4 and BA.5and the benefits of combining the booster shot with the introduction of the influenza vaccine.

Experts hope expanding the service will give those at higher risk of serious illness the protection they need and keep more people out of the hospital.

Who is still entitled to Covid boosters?

Others who are eligible for another dose include residents of a care home for older adults and staff, frontline health and social workers and people aged five to 49 in a clinical risk group – including pregnant women.

The vaccine is also offered to people ages five to 49 who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression and people ages 16 to 49 who are caregivers.

dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunization at UKHSA, said: “The extension of eligibility for the flu vaccine will help reduce the number of people falling seriously ill and ease pressure on the NHS, particularly during the busy winter period.

“It is also important that everyone who is eligible for the Covid-19 booster is invited to receive the vaccine, including pregnant women who are in the risk groups.

“Having Covid-19 during pregnancy can lead to complications.

“Vaccination including booster vaccination offers the best possible protection for you and your baby.”

Professor Anthony Harnden, vice-chair of the JCVI, said: “We have presented our final recommendations for the autumn program to ensure the NHS and the general health system have time to plan for a vaccine rollout well ahead of the winter season.

“The Covid-19 boosters are highly effective at boosting immunity and by offering another dose this fall to those at higher risk of serious illness, we hope to significantly reduce the risk of winter hospitalizations and deaths.”

All eligible groups are encouraged to adopt the vaccine when it is made available, even if they have received a spring booster, provided it has been at least three months since their last vaccination.

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHSC) will again offer the free flu vaccine to additional groups who are most at risk, including pre-school and elementary school children, those aged 65 and over and those in clinical risk groups, which has already been announced, the jab was offered.

The additional groups to be offered the vaccine in England are all adults aged 50 to 64 and secondary school children aged 7, 8 and 9 who will be offered the vaccine in order of school year.

In due course the NHS will announce when and how eligible groups can book an appointment for their autumn coronavirus booster and free flu shot.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Our vaccination program has been one of the fastest and most successful in the world.

“Because of our combined efforts, from our NHS who got these gunshots, to everyone who came forward to protect themselves and those around them, we have been able to open up our country while protecting lives and livelihoods.

“Today we confirmed the next phase of our booster program to keep our defenses strong through the fall and winter.

“Vaccines were our way out of this pandemic and now they will ensure that Covid can never haunt us in the same way again.”
