Second on the list is billionaire inventor James Dyson, 75, best known for developing market-leading vacuum technology.

He has climbed from fourth to second, overtaking the Reuben family and Sir Leonard Blavatnik.

Dyson’s vacuum cleaners are of course a household name, and now the inventor is shifting his focus to wearable technology.

His new gadgets include air-purifying masks, designed to improve air quality for people living in polluted areas, and noise-cancelling headphones.

Born in Norfolk, Dyson attended the Royal College of Art where he began inventing.

He soon developed the ball barrow, which replaced the wheel of a wheelbarrow with a ball and formed the basis of the iconic Dyson vacuum ball design.

In an exciting interview with Fast company Dyson made it clear that failure is important for success.

He said: “I made 5,127 prototypes of my vacuum before I got it right. There were 5,126 failures. But I learned from everyone.

“That’s how I came up with a solution. So I have nothing against failure. I’ve always believed that school children should be recognized by the number of failures they have.

“The kid who tries weird things and experiences a lot of failures to get there is probably more creative.”

Dyson misses out on the top spot on the Hinduja family’s rich list by £5.47 billion, despite his own fortune having risen by a massive £6.7 billion since last year.

Who are the richest people in Britain?

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2022, the richest people in the UK are Sri and Gopi Hinduja and their family, who have a net worth of £28.472 billion, an increase of £11.472 billion from the previous year.

Gopi, 82, based in London, and his son Dheeraj, 50, based in Leeds, have led the family towards eco-friendly transport.

As electric vehicles are being developed in the form of zero-emission buses and trucks, they will also work in several other sectors, including oil and banking.

The Hinduja group now owns the major oil company Gulf.

Brothers Sri and Gopi have topped the list for the fourth time and are now achieving their largest combined fortune in Rich List history.

At number four is Sir Leonard Blavatnik, who calls himself Sir Len. Born in Soviet Ukraine and raised north of Moscow, he has gone to great lengths to sever ties with Russia, despite it being the country where he originally made part of his fortune.

However, his last business ties with the country were severed in 2013 and he himself is a British and American citizen.
