Who is Calvin Ramsay?

Born on July 31, 2003, Calvin Ramsay is a Scottish footballer who plays at right-back for Aberdeen. The 18-year-old has been through the youth system at Pittodrie since joining the ranks in 2012, breaking into the first-team towards the end of last season as the Dons finished 4th in the Scots First League.

Ramsay has also worked through the ranks of the Scotland national team, having played for the Under-16s and Under-17s before becoming an established member of the Under-21s last year and making three competitive appearances for Scot Gemmill’s side to date.

Aged just 18, Ramsay has already made 37 appearances for Aberdeen since making his debut in March 2021, coming on as a late substitute in a 1-0 defeat by Dundee United. The right-back played a further five games in all competitions for the remainder of the season as he made his breakthrough to the first team.

But things have been completely different for Ramsay since this season and he has already played 31 games in all competitions, scoring once and providing nine assists for the Dons. He made his European debut in July in a UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier in a 5-1 win over Swedish side BK Hacken. He started at right-back and set up his side’s first goal.

Aberdeen has endured a tough season in the SPL and find themselves bottom of the table but Ramsay has been one of the few shining lights at the club this season with some inspiring performances that really showcased his natural talent and further highlighted why He’s attracting the attention of so many big clubs.

What was said about him?

A report from Goal.com Earlier this year, describing Ramsay as reminiscent of Trent Alexander-Arnold, elaborated on his qualities, saying: “Ramsay’s most obvious qualities are those that he brings to the future. Character leader and his willingness to attack opposing defenders is more reminiscent of a winger than a full-back.”

This was confirmed by the journalist Christian Falk, head of football at the German magazine Bild Twitter on April 20 that the Reds were interested in signing Ramsay after speculation they have been linked with a move for the 18-year-old. He tweeted: “Right. Jurgen Klopp is interested in Calvin Ramsey as a backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

Meanwhile, on April 19, Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin announced he was ready to lose Ramsay as one of two players to attract interest this summer. He said The Scottish Sun: “There are a lot of clubs out there that are particularly looking at those two players. I can’t tell you now that those players will definitely not leave in the summer.”
