EastEnders: Sam Mitchell first came in 2009

EastEnders airs Sam Mitchell’s return on the BBC next week and she’ll be ruffled in Walford soon.

Last seen in the square in 2016 following the death of her mother Peggy Mitchell, the character soon passed away again – leaving her young son Ricky behind with father Jack Branning.

It seems that she has had little contact with her family since then, but now she is back for a mysterious reason that is about to be confirmed in upcoming episodes.

After many different soaps over the years, here’s a reminder of her final appearance, what role she’s playing, and what she’s accomplished in the past in Albert Square.

Who is Sam Mitchell, and why is she back?

Sam Mitchell is the daughter of Peggy Mitchell, and the sister of Grant and existing character Phil Mitchell.

She is also Billy Mitchell’s cousin, while she was romantically linked to several residents of her time, including a relationship with Jack Branning, while she was also seeing Ricky Butcher.

Sam is back for a mysterious reason that she’s been keeping to herself, but fans will find out more next week.

Upon her return, she quickly befriends her nephew Ben, Phil’s new partner Kat, and her longtime rival Sharon Watts.

Fans may recall her involvement in the death of Den Watts, alongside Chrissie Watts and Zoe Slater, while she was also accused of murdering Archie Mitchell.

What happened to Sam and Jack, and is Ricky her son?

Sam and Jack had a brief meeting in 2009

Sam and Jack had a brief encounter in 2009, when he was staying with her cousin Ronnie Mitchell.

This resulted in her breaking up with her family, while she soon realized she was pregnant – but she initially insisted the baby was Ricky Butcher’s.

After the birth, a DNA paternity test was ordered and she lied that the results confirmed Richard was Ricky’s child, not Jack’s.

However, the truth eventually came out, and Sam made plans to leave his baby boy with Jack and Ronnie – only for her cousin to pay her to leave Walford for her baby.

In 2016, she brought her son Richard, now known as Ricky, back to Walford with her before making the devastating decision to leave him with Jack.

Jack is initially struggling to make a connection with his estranged son but is determined to get to know him, unaware that Sam is struggling with being a single mother.

After she left the country, Jack raised Ricky, who is now a teenager, and the two apparently had no contact with Sam until she returned the following week.
