Whoopi Goldberg lands a starring role in TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys

Whoopi Goldberg was cast as Bird Woman in the 2005 adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys.

The American actress, 66, will star in the six-part series from Amazon Studios alongside Malachi Kirby and Delroy Lindo.

The story follows the sons of Mr. Nancy, an incarnation of the West African trickster god Anansi, as they discover each other and embark on an adventure.

Lindo plays Anansi while Kirby takes on the role of the two sons – Fat Charlie and Spider.

The narrative will travel from contemporary London to Florida, the Caribbean and the mythical world before time, described as “a place of incredible beauty, magic and danger”.

One of the main antagonists, Goldberg’s Bird Woman is the embodiment of all birds, from stately races to aggressive seagulls, and Anansi wronged her long ago.

“It was at this point that she mentioned that she had just finished hearing Sir Lenny Henry read The Anansi Boys and that it was one of her favorite books.

The cast of animal gods from the world before time includes Hakeem Kae-Kazim as a tiger, Emmanuel Ighodaro as a lion and Cecilia Noble as an elephant.

The World Before Time is one of the locations brought to life at FirstStage Studios in Leith, Scotland using a new LED volume stage.
