Why Avatar Made Some Fans Sick In Theaters

3D movies are a great way to engage an audience, but for those with the experience of accommodation (now known as 3D motion sickness), it can be a complete nightmare. Vergence-accommodation is the name for the mismatched signals your brain receives as your eyes try to process the distance of a virtual 3D object and the focusing distance required for the eye to “place” the object. In many cases, people cannot send coherent signals to the brain to figure out what the object is and how far away it is because the 3D image exists on a different visual plane than the actual film screen and the eye. /mind constant trying to recalibrate may result in headaches and feelings of nausea and dizziness. In some severe cases it can even cause vomiting or in the case of a man in Taiwan, death.

“Avatar” isn’t the only 3D instance so far causing this phenomenon, like Nintendo had similar complaints after the release of their handheld Nintendo 3DS console. The entertainment presented in 3D was little during this time period, and most viewers’ eyes weren’t bombarded with constant visual stimuli or ultra-high definition images as they are now. Unfortunately, there is no “cure” for 3D motion sickness, but society is in a better place to consume 3D vehicles like the upcoming “Avatar: The Way of Water” than we are in 2009.
