Why does alcohol disturb my sleep?

Some people drink closer to bedtime to help them fall asleep. But that could start a dangerous cycle of more sporadic sleep, followed by more alcohol consumption. “I see a lot of people self-treating their insomnia with alcohol,” says Dr. Sabra Abbott, an associate professor of neurology in sleep medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She and other experts say continued nightly drinking can establish patterns of anxiety that can persist even after people have stopped drinking.

To help gauge how much alcohol affects your sleep, experts recommend a period of recovery from drinking, or what Dr. at least two weeks long. “It can be very easy to gauge how much alcohol affects your sleep,” she says. Many people think they have insomnia, she says, possibly just from drinking too much or being too close to bedtime.

“It turns out that if they don’t drink, they sleep much better,” says Dr. Martin, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. After the “holiday,” she says, “they can make more informed decisions about how much — and how often — they consume alcohol.”

Experts also suggest building in a buffer zone of at least a few hours between drinking and bedtime. A sleeping cap is not your friend. “It is okay to have a glass of wine with dinner four hours before bed,” says Dr. Abbott. Or maybe limit your drinks to happy hour or appetizers.

Alcohol can also mess up your morning routine. “People can turn to stimulants,” said Dr. Armeen Poor, a pulmonary and critical care physician at the Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York and assistant professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine. Like caffeine, drink coffee in the afternoon.

“That makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night,” he says. “And then you need that extra sedative, and then it just keeps coming around.”
